DEALING WITH D’EVILS

Cho was a d’evil. A d’evil is one who commits suicide immediately after committing murder. The “d’” represents damned, as is one who commits suicide and the evil is one who commits murder. A d’evil is an evil person, who is damned. A d’evil is a damned evil person.

D’evils should be forgotten quickly.  After they have committed their horrific deeds they should be removed from public consumption.  There is nothing redeeming about a d’evil’s story, except for law enforcement and psychological purpose; but for the rest of us, no.

There are d’evils amongst us now.  In a free and open society, d’evils will grow.   Rooting them out would seriously infringe upon our free and open society.  Their existence is a cost that comes with freedom.  You and I are free because we all are free.  Drawing lines seems a very Aryan kind of concept.  Tis better to neither be judge nor judged, thank you.

One step we could take to diminish d’evils from action, is to not feed them with stories of other d’evils.  Cho, the VT d’evil was fed by the Columbine d’evils, when their videos, writings and drawings were broadcast everywhere.  And now, we have broadcast this d’evils manifesto and video to some other soon to be known d’evil.

The recovery from a d’evils action centers and revolves around the victims.  It does not involve the d’evil in any way.  Broadcasting about the d’evil even puts the d’evils parents in danger.  News about the d’evil can also put any “related” entity in harm’s way.  The VT d’evil, being of Korean heritage, has caused unwarranted shame upon this entire species of people.  They have absolutely no responsibility for what this d’evil did, yet they feel guilt and are apologizing.  And I’m sure at times and in certain places they harbor some fear and concern for their safety.

The recovery from a d’evils action begins with the victims; their family, friends and the location’s family and friends. The primary victims have been killed, but the family and friends must deal with the grief and loss.  In their time of mourning, do they want to see photos, videos, manifestos and an entire history of the d’evil?  Every time that name and face appears, another bullet hits a mark.  Does the shooting really need to continue?

The location of the killing also has family and friends.  Columbine, Nickels Mines and VT/Blacksburg are communities, of and for families. These places are still alive.  They are also grieving for their lost members, and for themselves. What now?  What does tomorrow bring?  Every time the d’evils story is told, they too feel the sting of bullets and disbelief and heartbreak.  Does the shooting really need to continue?

On the other hand, the telling of these d’evil stories may inspire good work, as well as bad.  Perhaps someone of us will be inspired to re-double their study of psychology and perhaps discover how to identify a d’evil.  Or an engineering student will discover how to set up warning sensors throughout a campus that would detect the presence of gunpowder or bullets.  And if we cannot stifle the media, which I’m sure we cannot.  Then perhaps the news of the d’evil could be delayed until every victim’s family has given their okay to broadcast.  Perhaps we can give a little bit of control back to the victims.

We should be careful with full disclosure of these d’evils.  Yes there is a greater chance for beneficial inspiration than malicious, as there really are more good people than there are d’evils, but the d’evils maliciousness can be so very, very awful.  At the very least, might we keep the d’evils story quiet until all the victims have given permission for it to be released?  The story should be shared with law enforcement, psychologists and the victims, but held in private until the victims okay its release.

GUNS?

It was and is a constitutional right for us Americans to bear arms.   Why?  So that we could overthrow our own government if it became necessary.  We just won a war from our former country (and government) and we did not do it with words.  We did it on the battlefield, with guns.  And we were not really sure that we had won.  We feared a surprise attack, which did happen, or nearly so, in and around 1812. And so our founding fathers thought, we had better keep these weapons on hand, we may be needing them again. And presto, they are part of our country’s definition.

Our country’s definition is perhaps the greatest invention ever to grace this planet.  Our rights and freedoms and rules of government are absolutely brilliant and I would not trust anyone other than those same founding fathers to alter it.  The guns stay.  They are part of a set.

On the other hand, not everybody should have a gun.

What if, only those who can pass a psychological test would be entitled to buy a gun?  There must be a method of questioning people to determine if they have “killer tendencies”?  We have to pass a test to drive a car.  Why not some such test for the ownership of a gun?

And then, once we own a gun, it and all that it does is our responsibility.

And every, 3 years, we must renew the gun’s permit, by taking another test (or we could return it, for tax credits…huge tax credits.) and give an accounting of what the gun did during its last 3 years.  Wouldn’t we love to regale someone with our gunning pleasures over the last 3 years?  Perhaps we would be required to keep a log, like mileage logs.

Every gun must be registered, carry its own permit and shooting logs kept.

Think of all the employment this plan might create!

Gun permits would have to be expensive.  Even though many tax payers would agree to spend these dollars, it should be we gun lovers who pay for this.  We want to keep our guns and we don’t want bad apples and bad press to cause their being taken away.

Would these measures be foolproof?  Of course not, but illegal providers of guns, would have to share in the responsibility of whatever the gun does.

Would these measures be an undo burden on us legitimate gun owners?  Yes they would.  But, we are all part of communities and of families.  If we are going to want and demand that we keep these dangerous instruments inside our communities, we have to bear the responsibility for them.  We have to re-assure the community that we are responsible, conscientious and accountable.

Everybody in every community should know where every gun is, like we are trying to do with sex offenders.

But, what if I fail the test?  We may appeal, of course.  This is the United States of America.  We can appeal anything and everything or perhaps get a co-signer, someone who will share the responsibility of the gun.  We could ask our Congressman.  We could ask Charlton Heston, I’m sure he would share in my responsibility.

Do you think that the Columbine shooters or the Virginia Tech shooter would have passed such a test?  I think these three people were so deranged that no, they would not have passed.  They may have resorted to another weapon, or acquired a gun illegally of course, but maybe they would have skipped the murdering part.
